The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) is proud to report the very successful launch of its Student of the Year campaign in North Texas. A group of five dedicated and driven local high school students raised more than $63,000 in six weeks!
Will Jeffers, a sophomore from Hill School in Fort Worth, raised more than $27,000 and was named the 2016 North Texas Student of the Year. He is a blood cancer survivor and shared his personal story during his campaign. Will was awarded a $5,000 college scholarship from LLS.
Erica Mellon, a senior at John Paul II High school in Plano, was the runner up. She raised more than $23,000. She participated in this campaign in honor of her mother, a blood cancer survivor and former Spirit of Tom Landry Award winner. Erica won a $2,500 college scholarship.
Kennedy Beavers, Christopher Caldwell and Khirstyn Vu all received $1,000 scholarships for their fundraising and awareness efforts as candidates.
The success, creativity and ingenuity of the Student of the Year candidates far surpassed all expectations of the North Texas staff and Board of Trustees members.
Recruitment is already underway for the 2017 Student of the Year campaign. High school sophomores, juniors and seniors are eligible to raise money for LLS and win college scholarships. Learn more about the campaign here or contact Paige Wiebler.
