Student of the Year Winner Stephen McCarty Raises $51,250

The Grand Finale Gala for the North Texas Student of the Year campaign was held last Friday night at the Renaissance Hotel in Dallas.  A group of six dedicated and driven local high school students raised more than $61,996 in six weeks!
Stephen McCarty, a student at Covenant Classical School in Fort Worth, raised more than $51,250 and was named the 2017 North Texas Student of the Year.  He jumped at the opportunity to participate in the program because his father is currently undergoing treatment for acute myeloid leukemia (AML), one of the deadliest types of leukemia.  Stephen said he fundraised because he knows first-hand the impact a cancer diagnosis can have on a family.  Stephen used social media pages like Caring Bridge to help generate awareness of his campaign.  He sent fundraising letters to all of his family and friends and hosted several fun events at local venues in the Fort Worth area.  His Luau for Leukemia night and his Bingo night brought in over $3,500 for his campaign.

The success, creativity and ingenuity of the Student of the Year candidates far surpassed all expectations of the North Texas staff and Board of Trustees members.  Thank you to all of the students who participated!

Recruitment is already underway for the 2018 Student of the Year campaign.  High school sophomores, juniors and seniors are eligible to raise money for LLS and win college scholarships.  Learn more about the campaign here or contact Jessica Buckman.

Student of the Year Candidate:Lindsey Abbott

The 2nd Annual North Texas Student of the Year program boasts a strong class of high school candidates this year.  These students are currently competing in a six-week fundraising campaign to raise funds for and awareness of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS).  Alvord High School student Lindsey Abbott is one of the candidates and introduced herself and discusses why she chose to compete in this campaign this year.

What interested you in applying for Student of the Year?
I was interested in SOY because the LLS is doing great things for the fight against blood cancer, and I wanted to take part in that. I've lost friends to blood cancer, and I want to help create a world where nobody has to watch blood cancer win.

What other organizations or extracurricular activities are you involved in?
I'm involved in lots of extracurricular activities such as Student Council, FCCLA, and Horticulture Club. I am Alvord FFA President, District 1 FFA Student Advisor, and NHS Vice President. I also love being a Vacation Bible School Worship Leader at my church, and I'm frequently involved in various community service activities.

What do you hope to achieve while participating in this campaign with LLS?
The main thing I hope to achieve while participating in this campaign is to help educate people on what the LLS does and what blood cancers are. I feel like blood cancer is overlooked because people don't understand how terrible it is.

Where are you planning to go to school next year?
I will be attending Texas A&M University in the fall where I will be majoring in Biomedical Sciences. I'm so excited to (officially) become a part of the Aggie Family!

Favorite Quote:
My favorite quote is actually a bible verse. "The Lord is close to the broken hearted. He rescues those whose spirits are crushed." - Psalm 34:18. This always gives me hope whenever I'm feeling lonely, afraid, or just in need of some extra hope. It reminds me that even if I may feel destroyed, God is always there to pick me up and put all my pieces back together.

What interested you in applying for Student of the Year?I saw this on my school's naviance account under scholarship opportunities originally. When I read the description, I thought it was an admirable cause and saw it as an opportunity to help others and help my education.

What other organizations or extracurricular activities are you involved in?
I am involved with my high school's Kiwanis Club - or Key Club for short. This club is all about helping the community through volunteer service. We actively help everyone from disabled children to low-income seniors.

What do you hope to achieve while participating in this campaign with LLS?

I hope to gain many skills from this program. I want to be able to talk with others, to rally others, and to support this cause.

Where are you planning to go to school next year?
I am currently a sophomore, so next year I'll still be at my high school. However, I am still looking for a college that will give me a major in animation and/or the fine arts!

The 2nd Annual North Texas Student of the Year program boasts a strong class of high school candidates this year.  These students are currently competing in a six-week fundraising campaign to raise funds for and awareness of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS).  Lamar High School student Edward Vissoni is one of the candidates and introduced himself and discusses why he chose to compete in this campaign this year.

What interested you in applying for Student of the Year?
I am a survivor of stage 4 non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and personally know what it's like to go through the treatment of a life-threatening disease.  It is only natural for me to want to join the fight so that some day there will be a cure.

What other organizations or extracurricular activities are you involved in?
Besides the Student of the Year campaign, I am also a member of my high school band.

What are you hoping to achieve while participating in this campaign?
I hope that through this competition I will gain experience about what it means to raise money for others and to meet people whose lives have been affected by cancer.

Where are you planning to go to school next year?
I will be going on a church service trip as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.  When I return, I hope to attend University of Texas at Arlington and major in biomedical engineering.

I volunteer once a week with Aspen Hospice to visit hospice patients in my community, and I volunteer one Sunday a month with my church to teach the pre-K classes.

What are you hoping to achieve through your Student of the Year experience?
While participating in this campaign, I hope to achieve my goal of $8,000, but more importantly, I hope to make an impact in the lives of children and adults living with cancer with all the money and awareness I raise.

What are you plans for next year?
I am attending Stephen F. Austin next year in Nacogdoches, Texas. I will be majoring in Nursing, and once I graduate, I hope to work in the ICU for a few years before I go back to school to become a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist.

Student of the Year Khirstyn Vu

Student of the Year candidate Khirstyn Vu is in the middle of her six-week fundraising blitz for the North Texas Chapter of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS).  Vu, a senior at Juan Sequin High School in Arlington, is no stranger to getting involved in extracurricular activities and looking to help others.  Below she answers some questions about herself and her decision to participate in the inaugural Student of the Year campaign in North Texas.

What interested you in applying for Student of the Year?
Initially during the time I had applied for Student of the Year, I was looking up ways to cheer up my aunt. At the time she had just been diagnosed with cancer, and I wanted to see what I could do to show that I supported her, despite the fact that she lives halfway across the country from me.  After thinking it over for a few weeks I decided to apply because I am avidly searching for scholarships so I thought it would be a good chance to try all while taking part in a great cause.

What other organizations or extracurricular activities are you involved in?
I am a part of our church's youth group, interned with public relations at a local hospital, and even had the chance to work on patient floors as well as the emergency room. Outside of school I have the privilege to volunteer at health clinics to provide free aid and diabetes testing for our community, help out at nursing homes by carrying out the musical memory program as well as tactile therapeutic games, and have been an active member of our local Medical Reserve Corps of Tarrant County. I am also involved in various extracurricular such as Spanish Club, Chorale, The Environmental Club, Student Council, National Art Honor Society, National Technical Honor Society, and a few more where I hold various leadership positions. Additionally, I am president of our Health Occupation Students of America, Future Business Leaders of America, National Honor Society, and Key Club chapters.

What do you hope to achieve while participating in this campaign with LLS?
Throughout the campaign I hope to achieve optimal results just as every other candidate. I am striving to do the best I can for LLS and in the end I want to be able to say that my best was good enough. I have come to find that the task at hand was not as easy as I thought it would be. I just hope my aunt is proud of me for helping others as I know she has been doing all of her life. She is the strongest woman I know, and a survivor. I aspire to be a fighter, to be intelligent, and to help others when they need me just as my aunt.

Meet Paige Wiebler

The North Texas Chapter of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) is thrilled to introduce its newest addition to the Special Events team.  Meet Paige Wiebler.  She is a campaign specialist in the Dallas office and will be focusing her efforts on the Student of the Year campaign and the Links Fore Leukemia Golf Tournament.  Read below as this energetic woman introduces herself.

"Hello!

Where to begin? I was born and raised in the great state of Iowa where a piece of my heart will always be. After graduating college this past May, my urge to live, travel and gain experiences from other parts of the country – potentially the world – grew to take predominance over the love of my Midwestern roots. And just like that I landed in Dallas.

I attended Iowa State University (go Cyclones!) where I was a member of Chi Omega sorority. I also became involved with the Women’s Club Soccer Team and multiple philanthropic initiatives benefiting organizations such as Make-A-Wish, Special Olympics, and the American Cancer Society. I might be bias but I couldn’t imagine a better place, filled with even better people, on a more beautiful campus to have spent the past four years.

I come from a very large blended family and I adore all of them down to the very last one (Even my youngest brother Reid, who would probably disagree!). The amount of support and love I receive from them no matter where life takes me means everything.

When I was in the fourth grade my father was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.  Chemotherapy, radiation and a stem cell transplant were all among the treatments he received during his long, difficult, courageous battle.  Now the most beautiful guardian angel, my dad, is my inspiration to join LLS in the fight to end all blood cancers.

Fun Facts About Me:
- I could eat Mexican food for every meal
- I’m obsessed with all T.V. series created by Shonda Rhimes (Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, How to Get Away With Murder)
- I’d be lost (literally) without my GPS
- Country music is my go to and I’ve been to more concerts than I can count
- Coffee is my saving grace
- My next travel destination is somewhere in Europe

I couldn’t be more excited to join the Special Events team here at LLS.  As an organization so incredibly close to my heart, I can’t wait to start making a difference with you all!"

We are happy to have Paige as part of the North Texas family.  Reach out and introduce yourself.  She can be contacted at Paige.Wiebler@lls.org or (972) 996-5916.

NEW: Student of the Year

The North Texas Chapter of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) is pleased to introduce its newest fundraising campaign: Student of the Year.  This new campaign is designed specifically for high school students who are interested in raising money for LLS to help fight cancer, earn service hours and qualify for scholarships.

Below are some frequently asked questions about the Student of the Year Program:

Who is the typical Student of the Year candidate?
Candidates in this program are very diverse but all tend to be student leaders within their school or community.  A candidate must be a sophomore, junior or senior in high school and interested in earning community service hours and qualifying for scholarships.  Students must live in the North Texas region and have a network of friends and family that are able to help them during the six week fundraising campaign.

Describe a typical campaign.
How each candidate chooses to raise money for LLS is totally up to them.  Similar to the Man & Woman of the Year campaign, candidates form a campaign team to help with their fundraising efforts.  Previous participants have raised money through personal fundraising pages and online campaigns, letter writing campaigns, candy sales at school, approaching their parent's friends and business contacts about sponsorships and donations, and charity volleyball tournaments.  The type of campaign each student runs is based on their personal connections and time availability.  While the money can only be applied to the candidate's account during the six week period, students are encouraged to line up commitments before the start of the campaign.

What kind of support will these students receive from local LLS staff?
Each candidate will have a dedicated LLS staff person at their disposal before and during the campaign.  This staff person will help set a fundraising plan and provide guidance and address any questions that come up during the campaign.

What does a typical Student of the Year participant raise during this campaign?
Each student commits to raising $5,000 during the six week campaign.  The majority of students raise significantly more.  LLS staff is available to help students with their goal setting and execution strategies.

What if the student does not raise the suggested amount?  Will their credit card be charged for the remaining balance, like Team In Training?
A student will not be charged if they do not reach the $5,000 commitment.  Failure to meet this level is very rare and staff will work with each student to ensure that their personal goals are met.

Who wins a scholarship?
There are a number of incentives offered to candidates based on how much they raise during this campaign.  A college scholarship is awarded to the top fundraising student in the campaign.  Participants can also earn letters of recommendation from the Executive Director of the North Texas Chapter of LLS.  A staff person will be able to explain the incentive levels during the application process.

Must each student have their own Honored Hero?
An Honored Hero is a blood cancer patient or survivor who serves as a reminder about who these funds will benefit. Student of the Year candidates raise money for a local Honored Hero.   The program will have an Honored Hero that applicants may use as their inspiration if they do not already have a personal connection of their own.
